What Can Be Registered as a Utility Model?

According to Belarus legislation, a utility model application must relate to one utility model or a group of utility models united by a single inventive idea.

The protectable subject matter is limited to devices only. Unlike patents, which may cover products and methods, utility models in Belarus provide a faster and more streamlined route for device-based technical solutions.

Utility Model Registration Procedure in Belarus

The registration procedure in Belarus is examination-light and consists of the following stages:

1. Filing and Formal Examination

After filing, the application undergoes a formal examination within approximately 3–4 months.

The Examination Board verifies compliance with formal requirements and confirms that the application relates to a protectable utility model.

2. Grant Decision and Patent Issuance

If all required documents are submitted and the formal requirements are met, a grant decision is issued.

To proceed to grant:

  • the registration fee must be paid
  • the first post-grant annuity must be paid

Deadline: 2 months from the date of receipt of the decision

After payment, the decision is published in the Official Bulletin and the patent is issued.

The procedure of the utility model registration in Belarus takes about 1-2 years.
